MADOOGALI TOURIST RESORT
North Ari Atoll, Maldives

ACCOMMODATION
A sandy path winds in front of the bungalows, shaded by mature palms, bowers of bougainvilla and native trees. Two paths cut across the island and in the middle where they meet is a garden. Here it is swept clean, otherwise leaves are left under the foliage to form compost. The whole effect is of a very well kept inhabited island. With the addition of delightful “found” objects, such as driftwood, places as sculptures.

The 50 individual bungalows are solidly constructed of coral and handsomely decorated inside and out. Large and well laid out, they include a telephone, a/c, h/c water and minibar.

LOCATION
Madoogali has no groynes and no walls. The beach goes almost all the way around the island, and if it is not always wide that is a small price to pay. (It should be said that, unlike Madoogali, island on the outside of Atolls have to deal with big swells from the open sea landing directly on the shore).

The buildings are tastefully designed and kept in perfect order. Yet that, in some ways, is the easy part. Over time most resorts cannot resist the pressure to build groynes on the beach and walls in the lagoon in a never ending attempt to keep all the beaches in place throughout the year.

Madoogali is a gem of a resort, a model for any other island. Few resorts are in such a natural state yet also completely up-to-date and stylish. Its secrets is constant maintenance and a deep commitment to the environment.
